Ready to Compete? Let's Get You Started.

Everything you need to know to shoot your first match – from choosing a discipline to what gear actually matters (and what doesn’t).

What is Competitive Shooting?

Competitive shooting is exactly what it sounds like – timed shooting sports where you test your skills against other shooters and the clock.

Think of it like golf, but louder and with more adrenaline. You show up, shoot a course of fire, and your score tells you how you did. Some formats focus on speed, some on precision, some on both.

There are divisions for every budget and skill level – from bone-stock pistols to race guns that cost more than your car.

The community is welcoming (seriously), the learning curve is manageable, and the addiction is real. Most people who try it are hooked after their first match.

FOUR STEPS TO YOUR FIRST MATCH

01

PICK A DISCIPLINE

Start where your interest already is. Pistol person? USPSA. Rifle shooter? PRS. Want all three guns in one match? 3-Gun. The guides below break down every format.

02

GEAR UP — THE MINIMUM

A reliable gun, a sturdy belt and holster, eye and ear pro, and a few magazines. That’s the whole list — upgrade after you know the sport, not before.

03

FIND A MATCH

Majors live on our calendar; local club matches run every weekend. Find a club near you, pick a date, and register — most clubs welcome first-timers.

04

SHOW UP & SHOOT

Tell the match director it’s your first match — you’ll get squadded with people who will walk you through every stage. Listen at the safety brief, follow the range commands, and enjoy it.
