The Hanson profile is what makes this barrel worth talking about. Most AR barrels have a step — a sharp shoulder at the gas block journal — that creates an asymmetric mass distribution and contributes to barrel whip. The Hanson eliminates that shoulder entirely, tapering continuously from the chamber toward the muzzle. The result is faster barrel harmonics settlement between shots, which translates to tighter groups during rapid strings of fire.

At 27 oz with a .750" gas block journal, this sits in a light-medium contour range. It's noticeably lighter than a government profile barrel but carries enough material at the chamber end to handle sustained match-day round counts without opening up as quickly as a true pencil barrel. The .223 Wylde chamber safely shoots both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO, and the 1:8 twist stabilizes everything from 55gr practice ammo through 77gr match loads like the Hornady 73gr ELD-M or Sierra 77gr OTM.

The barrel ships with a pinned low-profile gas block already installed — that's a real convenience and saves you $30-40 on a separate block. However, it's non-adjustable, which means you can't tune gas volume for suppressed shooting or for running lighter bolt carrier setups. Hanson barrels are also not compatible with aftermarket piston conversion kits.

Description

The Ballistic Advantage 16″ .223 Wylde Hanson barrel is a Premium Series AR-15 barrel machined from 416R stainless steel with a bead blasted finish. It replaces a standard AR-15 barrel and is designed around BA’s proprietary Hanson profile — a shoulder-less contour that eliminates the abrupt step at the gas block journal found on government and other traditional profiles.

The .223 Wylde chamber is a hybrid specification that safely fires both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition. The tighter chamber dimensions compared to a standard 5.56 chamber improve accuracy with match-grade .223 loads while maintaining full pressure compatibility with 5.56 mil-spec ammo. The 1:8 twist rate is a versatile choice, stabilizing bullet weights from 55gr through 77gr effectively.

As a Premium Series barrel, this includes several upgrades over BA’s standard Modern Series: the barrel extension features Nickel Boron coated extended M4 feed ramps for smoother cycling and reduced wear at a high-friction contact point. Every barrel is High Pressure (HP) tested and Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI) before shipping.

The Hanson series ships with a pinned low-profile .750″ gas block pre-installed. The gas block is pinned (not set screw), which provides a more secure, permanent installation that won’t shift under recoil. The mid-length gas system runs a softer recoil impulse than carbine-length at this barrel length, which helps with sight tracking between shots. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 for standard AR-15 muzzle devices.

Note: Hanson barrels are not compatible with aftermarket piston conversion kits. The included gas block is non-adjustable. BA barrels are known to fit tight into upper receivers — having a heat gun available during installation is recommended.
