Like most competitive shooters, I have a problem leaving well enough alone.
Chasing performance, reliability, and practicality got obsessive for me once I started LARPing around in The Tactical Games. This rifle is where that chase landed. It shipped from JP in June 2021, debuted at the July 2021 TTG Regional in Iowa, and it has been my primary Tactical Games and tactical 2-Gun rifle every season since. Roughly 8,000 rounds. Zero failures I’d blame on the rifle.
The part that actually matters is not this rifle. It’s the three configurations I went through before it, two of which were mistakes I paid for on the clock. So we’re going to do those first, because the reasoning is the useful part and the parts list is just the receipt.
The Three Rifles Before This One
2019: The 3-Gun Rifle That Wasn’t a Tactical Games Rifle
When The Tactical Games became relevant in my life, the rule set wasn’t quite established. What existed was “you should have a tactical rifle, mostly factory setup.” So I brought a JP-15 with a PSC-11 side charge upper, threw a non-magnified optic and backup irons on it, and made sure a full mass carrier was in there per the rules at the time.
It was a 3-Gun rifle. 16″ competition profile barrel, tunable gas block, JP Thermal Dissipator, silent captured spring, JP fire control group. Every one of those is a performance feature, and every one of them costs weight. The whole package ran about nine and a half pounds.
Here’s what I learned fast, and it’s the single most important thing on this page for anyone building a first Tactical Games rifle: this is not 3-Gun. In 3-Gun you shoot a stage in 30 to 45 seconds and you do not care what your rifle weighs. In The Tactical Games that rifle is slung on your back and you are carrying it for 10 to 12 minutes, often longer, while your heart rate does things it shouldn’t. Nine and a half pounds gets old in a hurry.
Time to shave weight.
2020: The Suppressor Experiment
Second iteration got interesting. The rules allowed either a flash hider or a suppressor as your muzzle device, so the logic seemed obvious. Put a can on it, fight some muzzle rise, reduce shooter disruption, get better feedback on steel impacts.
I also went down to a 10.5″ barrel. If I’m only shooting to 150 yards I don’t need 16 inches and I don’t care about the velocity. Pinning the suppressor got me to 16″ overall, which avoided both a pistol brace, which doesn’t give me the support I need, and an SBR, because I don’t want to deal with the paperwork when I travel.
On paper, and honestly in practice, it worked. The rifle shot great. I was still getting impacts at 400 yards, though velocity fell off considerably.
Then I took it to a match.
The heat was the killer. Mirage coming off the suppressor made the sight picture unusable, and no amount of heat shroud fixed it. And no matter how diligent I was, that suppressor found opportunities to brand me in places I’d rather not discuss. Suppressors have their place in the tactical world, in hunting, in plenty of applications. For being competitive in The Tactical Games, I found it to be too much of a liability on the clock.
This was also the iteration where I moved to a low power variable optic, which the rules opened up around 2020. Offset irons were still required at that point, and they worked, mostly.
I’d like to pretend that rifle never happened.
2021: Too Light
So I went back to the original platform and applied the actual lesson: keep the weight down, keep the velocity up, keep the muzzle device simple. That meant a 14.5″ ultralight barrel and JP’s then-new M-LOK hand guard, which saved real weight and gave me the configurability and maneuverability I wanted around barricades and VTAC ports.
That rifle was incredibly versatile and genuinely accurate. Everything I needed. You’d think that’s where you stop.
It was too light. I’m used to a heavier front end, and the balance was wrong for how I handle recoil. I hate saying a competition rifle is too light, and I’m aware how that sounds, but that’s what it was.
What This Rifle Is
Which is where JP came in and built this one.
13.5″ light contour barrel, JP 3-prong flash hider pinned and welded to 16″ overall. That put weight back on the front end relative to the ultralight and gave me the balance I’d lost, without giving up much velocity. It shoots to 400 yards with full confidence, further if the ammo cooperates.
The operating system stayed low mass. The silent captured spring stayed. The trigger went to a flat-face JP. Past the first month, when the grip went, the configuration hasn’t changed across five seasons and roughly 8,000 rounds. That’s the most useful thing I can tell you about it.
Why 13.5 Inches and a Pinned Flash Hider
The barrel is 13.5″ with a JP 3-prong flash hider pinned and welded to reach 16″ overall. That is a legal-length rifle, not an SBR.
Two reasons for the length. The first is handling. On a stage with barricades, VTAC ports, and vehicle work, a shorter tube in front of your hands means clearing a port cleanly instead of clipping it. The second is balance, which is the lesson from the 14.5″ ultralight. The light contour at 13.5″ put mass back where I wanted it without adding the weight that killed the 2019 build.
What I gave up is muzzle tuning. Once a device is pinned and welded, it’s the device you own for the life of that barrel.
A barrel under 16 inches on a firearm with a stock is a short-barreled rifle under the NFA, full stop, unless a muzzle device is permanently attached to bring the barrel to 16 inches or longer. Permanently means pinned and welded, blind pinned, or high-temp silver soldered, done by someone who does it for a living. There is no legal way to shoot a 13.5″ upper on a stocked lower first and decide about pinning later. Sort the muzzle device out before the barrel ships, and have the pin and weld done as part of the build. If you want to try a short barrel before committing, that’s a pistol configuration or an approved Form 1, and those are different conversations.
The chambering is 5.56 NATO rather than .223 Wylde, which gives up a little theoretical accuracy for more latitude on what you can feed it. In 2021 that turned out to be the correct bet.
In practice I run Federal Gold Medal Match 69 grain out of this rifle, with a handload that closely matches it when I want to save money. It holds consistently sub-MOA at 100 yards with that load, prone or off a bench with a bipod, and after 8,000 rounds I still feel like I’m in the sweet spot for barrel wear. For local 2-Gun inside 150 yards I’ll shoot bulk 55 grain, which does just fine on targets down to 4 inches at 100 yards. The 1:7 twist is there for the heavy stuff at distance.
The Tuning Triangle: Gas Block, Carrier, and Spring
Three parts on this rifle work as one system, and none of them make sense alone.
The gas block is JP’s two-piece low-profile adjustable unit, the JPGS-9D. Black stainless, .750 bore, detent-indexed adjustment screw with an anti-migration tensioner so the setting doesn’t walk under recoil. Mid-length port.
The carrier is JP’s LMOS group, the BC-3, with the JP EnhancedBolt. 8.8 ounces complete per JP, against roughly 11 to 12 for a standard carrier group. The bolt is 9310 steel with a DLC coating, a larger cam pin hole, and reworked extractor and ejector geometry.
The spring is JP’s Gen 2 Silent Captured Spring in the standard weight, three steel weights at 2.9 ounces. It rides on a guide rod like a 1911 recoil system instead of slapping around inside the buffer tube.
Individually these are modest changes. Together they’re the whole personality of the rifle. Less reciprocating mass moving at a controlled velocity means the sight picture goes fewer places between shots, and nothing rings against your cheek while it cycles. The condition JP states plainly and I’ll repeat: a low mass operating system needs an adjustable gas block. Cut the mass without cutting the gas and you’ve built a rifle that beats itself up and throws brass into the next county.
Here’s the five-year reliability record, stated plainly. Roughly 8,000 rounds. No failures I’d attribute to the rifle. The stoppages I’ve had were failures to eject, and both times the cause was questionable ammo with the gun running on the dry side. Lubrication fixed it. I’ve replaced the SCS o-rings and the bolt gas ring a couple of times on principle, not because anything failed or showed premature wear.

The Hand Guard Is a Position Decision
JP’s M-LOK Series in rifle length: 12.5″ of overall length on a 1.6″ tube, integral full-length top rail, seven M-LOK positions around the tube, mounted on JP’s dual-nut system with a bayonet-style cross bolt.
One practical note, because it comes up every time someone considers this setup: the gas block lives under the hand guard, and you do not have to pull the tube to get at it. JP’s M-LOK hand guard has cuts specifically for reaching the adjustment screw. Re-tuning is a hex key through a slot, not a disassembly.
A 12.5″ hand guard on a 13.5″ barrel covers nearly the whole barrel, and that’s the point. Every inch of tube is an inch where my support hand or a barricade can go. In a sport where you shoot off ammo cans, tires, sandbags, and whatever the match director dragged out of the shed, forward hand real estate is what separates a stable position from a hopeful one. This is the same hand guard that sold me on the 14.5″ ultralight build, and it’s the one part that carried straight across.
The obvious objection is heat, because with a 12.5″ tube on a 13.5″ barrel there is almost no exposed barrel radiating anywhere else. In five seasons it hasn’t been a problem, sustained strings included. It has never once gotten hot enough during a stage to change how I hold it.
Trigger and Controls
The fire control is JP’s interchangeable single stage with the competition spring set at 3.0 to 3.5 pounds, flat shoe. JP’s system uses color-coded spring kits to set pull weight and has adjustable engagement and over-travel.
To be clear on something, because it’s come up: I run the JP roller trigger on my original 20″ 3-Gun rifle. This one gets the flat face. Different guns, different jobs.
The detail most people miss is the safety. This rifle came with JP’s adjustable selector wearing two different lever profiles, the SL-1 standard and the SL-3 ultra low profile. That’s not cosmetic. The full-size lever goes where your firing thumb sweeps it, and the ultra low profile lever goes on the other side, where a standard-height lever would otherwise ride against your trigger finger every time you index. If you shoot a high thumbs-forward grip, that fixes a problem you may have stopped noticing you had.
The charging handle is a Radian Raptor-LT, the lighter version of the Raptor. Ambi matters for one specific reason: transitioning to support side and clearing a malfunction on the clock is a real event in 2-Gun and TTG, and reaching over the receiver to work a right-side-only latch with your weak hand costs seconds you don’t get back.
Grip and Stock
One part came off this rifle almost immediately, and running a plate carrier is the reason.
The grip angle matters more with plates on than without. A vertical or near-vertical grip puts your wrist somewhere the carrier doesn’t want it. JP’s Hogue grip went in the parts bin inside the first month in favor of a Magpul K2, whose angle sits right for how I hold the rifle with a carrier on. That’s the whole reason, and it isn’t a knock on the Hogue.
The stock is the Hogue carbine it shipped with, and it has outlasted every experiment. I swap stocks regularly to try things and I always come back to this one, for two reasons that have nothing to do with performance charts. It’s the only stock I’ve run that doesn’t pull my beard hair out, which sounds like a joke and is not one when you’re doing twenty position changes in a stage. And it’s the most versatile when I’m switching between wearing a plate carrier and not, which I do constantly between TTG and local 2-Gun.
The Optic Setup

The 1-10 went on this rifle for an unglamorous reason: it was a weight savings over the 1-6 I’d been running. Then I fell in love with it. Having 1x through 10x on one rifle means the same gun handles a 10-yard steel array and a 400-yard plate without a scope swap between stages, and the first focal plane reticle means my holds are the same at any magnification. The offset dot is not redundancy. It’s a position tool. There are stages, especially in TTG, where you’re shooting from a rolled or canted position the primary optic’s eye box won’t tolerate, or where you’re coming off a physical event with your heart rate high and finding a reticle at 1x is slower than finding a dot. Rolling the rifle 45 degrees to a dot beats hunting an eye box.
Two things a first-time offset user should know. The dot sits high and to the side of bore, so it carries its own zero and its own holds, and the geometry shifts when you cant the rifle. That’s the subject of shooting a canted rifle. And the mount matters, because a 45-degree mount is a lever arm bolted to a rail and a cheap one will move on you.
My zeros: 200 yards on the 1-10, 25 yards on the offset dot. The 200 puts the useful part of the trajectory where TTG actually presents targets, so holdover only becomes a conversation past that. The 25 on the dot matches what the dot is for, which is fast work up close.
Five Years of Abuse
This rifle has been through it.
The one that stands out is dry Texas heat with wind and that fine red dirt silt that gets into everything. When that mixes with oil on a bolt carrier it becomes a polishing compound, and if you’re not paying attention it will work on your parts for you. That’s the environment that taught me to think about lubrication as a variable rather than a checkbox.
My actual cleaning cadence, stated honestly rather than aspirationally: a full cleaning every couple of years, or sooner if weather exposure earns it. Outside of that it gets lubricated and it gets shot. Both stoppages in five years came from letting it run dry with ammo I shouldn’t have trusted, which means my failures have been maintenance failures, not equipment failures.
Round count is roughly 8,000 through the 2026 season, across half a dozen TTG events and skirmishes and about a dozen local 2-Gun matches a year.
What I’d Change
Two things, and the first one may surprise you given everything above.
I’d go longer. If I built this today I’d push it to a 16″ barrel with a 15″ hand guard, for velocity and better performance at distance.
That is not a retraction of anything I just said. The reason this rifle is 13.5″ was handling, and that reasoning was correct for the courses of fire I was shooting in 2021. TTG has been stretching its distances since. At those ranges velocity is what you come up short on, and a 16″ barrel buys it back. A 15″ hand guard keeps the forward hand real estate that made the 13.5″ work in the first place. Same rifle, same logic, moved two and a half inches to follow where the sport went.
If you’re building for TTG right now rather than in 2021, start at 16″ and keep it light.
The muzzle device. The pinned 3-prong does very little for muzzle rise, and on a rifle built entirely around flat cycling that reads like an inconsistency. It isn’t. TTG rules don’t allow compensators. Your options are a flash hider or a suppressor, and I’ve already run the suppressor experiment and don’t care to repeat it. I still don’t like what a can does to cycling, back pressure, and gas in your face.
If I built this again I’d pin a flash hider that can quick-connect to a suppressor, so the option exists without committing to it. As it sits, this rifle runs well on the three-prong and the splits are where I want them.
Worth being clear about what that means for you: if your sport allows comps, this is the one component of my build you should not copy. Go read best compensators for competition AR-15s instead. I’m working inside a rule set you may not be.
Who This Build Is For
It fits you if you shoot Tactical Games, tactical 2-Gun, or multigun where stages mix close targets with distance, you carry the rifle as much as you shoot it, and you’re willing to tune a gas system rather than bolt one together.
Skip it if:
- You need field-serviceable simplicity. The Silent Captured Spring is a sealed assembly. It’s excellent, and it is not something you swap or shim in a parking lot between stages the way you can with a standard buffer and spring. Carry a spare or carry a standard buffer setup.
- You’re building your first competition rifle. Spend the money on ammo and a shot timer. This rifle didn’t make me faster. Reps did. What it did was stop being the limiting factor, which is a different and much smaller thing.
- Your budget has a hard ceiling under $1,500. This was a $2,409 rifle in 2021 dollars before optics, and the glass on it costs more than the rifle.
- You want a comp. See above. If your rules allow one, build around it.
One thing I’ll correct from how builds like this usually get described: a low mass carrier on a tuned gas block does not make the rifle picky about ammo in the way people claim. Mine runs bulk 55 grain and match 69 grain both. What changes with ammo is long-range performance, not whether the gun cycles. The reliability question is lubrication, not diet.
Would I Build It Again
Not identically, and I said why above: 16″ barrel, 15″ hand guard, same everything else.
That’s the honest end of a five-year story. Three rifles taught me what a Tactical Games rifle needs to be, this one got it right for the sport as it existed in 2021, and the sport moved. The parts that made this rifle good are all still the right parts. The length is the only thing I’d move, and only because the targets did.

What should a first Tactical Games rifle weigh?
Lighter than your 3-Gun rifle. My first TTG rifle was a nine and a half pound 3-Gun build, and it was a mistake. In 3-Gun you shoot a stage in 30 to 45 seconds. In The Tactical Games you carry that rifle slung for 10 to 12 minutes or longer, with your heart rate up, before you shoot it. Weight you never notice in 3-Gun becomes the whole problem here.
Should I run a suppressor at The Tactical Games?
I tried it and moved away from it. Mirage coming off a hot can made the sight picture unusable, no heat shroud fixed it, and it burned me more than once. Add the slowed cycling, the back pressure, and the gas in your face, and I found it to be a liability on the clock. Suppressors have their place. For me this isn’t it.
Why pin a muzzle device to a 13.5″ barrel instead of running 16″?
Handling around barricades and ports, and balance. Pinning a device to reach 16 inches overall keeps the rifle out of SBR territory without the paperwork. The cost is that the device becomes permanent, so decide before the barrel ships.
Does a low mass bolt carrier hurt reliability?
Not in my experience, as long as the gas is tuned to it and you keep it lubricated. Mine has run roughly 8,000 rounds across bulk 55 grain and match 69 grain. The only stoppages I’ve had came from running it dry with questionable ammo. What changes with ammo selection is long-range performance, not whether the gun cycles.
What does the JP Silent Captured Spring actually do?
It replaces the buffer and spring with a captured assembly on a guide rod, so the spring never contacts the buffer tube. That eliminates the spring twang and the mechanical rattle you feel through your cheek. It’s a feel and consistency upgrade, not a recoil reduction device.
Why run an offset red dot with a 1-10x LPVO?
Speed in positions the primary optic’s eye box won’t tolerate, and speed when your heart rate is high coming off a physical event. Rolling the rifle to a 45-degree dot beats hunting an eye box or changing magnification on the clock. Mine is zeroed at 25 yards, which is what it is for.
Would you build this same rifle again in 2026?
Not identically. I’d go to a 16″ barrel with a 15″ hand guard for the velocity and the better performance at distance. TTG has been pushing its ranges out since 2021 and that’s where the gap is now. Everything else on the rifle I’d repeat.
